Well, I did create a NAND backup while the HDD was re-formatting, but without BootMii, I can't restore it. (i have since seen the config entry "ntfs_write = 1")
Thinking that to be an issue with the Forwarder channel, I attempted to start HBC, which not hangs with a black screen. When started at this time from the Forwarder, it hangs saying "Loading". USB Loader would not see the HDD after that change so I replaced the original file.
Now the USB loader is able to see the drive but not write to it, so I used the v60-222.dol. After reading the README-CFG, I saw that NTFS was supported, so I wiped the HDD and reformatted as NTFS. I was attempting to get FTPii to work when it kept telling me that the disk file system failed. I had 500G formated as FAT32 using GParted, USB loader liked it.
